Monsterpalooza 2013: THIS WEEKEND!

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Despite the huge number of haunted attractions in the area, Southern California doesn’t have a haunt convention per se. But what we do have is Monsterpalooza, an impressive celebration of the “Art of Monsters,” and it’s an event that gets bigger and better every year. Although you won’t find much about the haunted attraction industry here, the assortment of horror movie collectibles, art, makeup, and merchandise is well worth the visit.

The event is taking place this weekend, April 12-14 this year, and tickets are now on sale. We strongly suggest that you buy your tickets in advance. This event has become incredibly popular, and the ticket line is long and slow (we waited almost 2 hours last year). We hope that Monsterpalooza will find a bigger venue soon; for now, it’s returning to the Burbank Marriott. If you visit in the afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, be prepared for large crowds.

This year’s guests include Eric Roberts, Ace Frehley (KISS), Lita Ford, Tom Woodruff Jr (FX artist), Michael Westmore (makeup artist), and John Murdy (creative director of Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood).

Be sure to check out our coverage of last year’s Monsterpalooza, and visit the Monsterpalooza website for more information.

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

kk_hauntcon2013 is being coined as ‘the year of fear’ and we like how that sounds. The year is already starting off right with some exciting news about the haunt tours being scheduled for HAuNTcon 2013 taking place in Irving, Texas April 24-28.

Every year the convention travels to a new city to give attendees and Haunt Stalkers another chance to tour the Haunted Attractions that they may not be able to get away to experience in October. With this year’s convention taking place in Dallas, TX, Haunt Stalkers will have exclusive access to some of the most renowned haunts in the nation. In fact, the Dallas area has so many Haunts they’re offering haunt tours across 3 nights. In addition, there’s a newly added pre-show haunt tour which will cover 13 haunts in a record 32 hours! This sounds like a Haunt Stalker’s nightmare come true and you can bet that the Scare Zone crew is planning to pack our body bags to attend what is seemingly becoming one of best haunt conventions to date!

But the pre-show tour is not just business. We will be traveling the width and breath of Dallas Ft. Worth on this incredible tour. Lunch on Wednesday is at the infamous Ole’ Spaghetti Warehouse (reportedly haunted). What do you do when you are fanatics in the true sense of the word for the 60′s TV sitcom The Munsters? If you are Sandra and Chuck McKee you build a replica of the Munster House and live in it. The owners have invited us for a visit of this amazing residence. While we are talking about amazing homes, one more stop on the 2013 HAuNTcon tour is Dallas Cowboy Stadium, home of the Texas NFL team. No trip to Texas is complete without a visit to this amazing structure.

Scare Zone’s 2012 Year in Review

Sunday, December 30th, 2012

As 2012 comes to a close, Scare Zone would like to thank all of our readers for checking our our site this year. It was a great year for haunts and horror, and we’re glad to see the haunted attraction business growing bigger and better every year. Be sure to check back with us throughout 2013 as we bring you the latest news and rumors regarding haunted attractions nationwide.

Of course, you can’t end a year without a best of/worst of list. So as we slowly lower 2012 into its grave, it’s time to look back at some of the best and worst haunt and horror moments of the past year.

Best of 2012

♦ Haunts aren’t just for Halloween anymore – Over the past few years, haunted attractions have been making an effort to expand their business beyond the standard October Halloween season. This is a great trend for haunt stalkers, because it gives us many opportunities to be terrified throughout the year. In 2012, we saw haunts open for Friday the 13th (January and April), Valentine’s Day, and Christmas. 2012 also saw the inauguration of a great new year-round haunt in (where else?) Las Vegas, Eli Roth’s Goretorium.

♦ Haunt and horror conventions continued to get bigger and more innovative – And the best of the bunch include TransWorld (March), Monsterpalooza (April), HauntCon (May), and the Midwest Haunters Convention (June). Not only are these conventions a great place to see the latest in haunt technology and innovation, but they also feature off-season haunt tours! This year, we saw horror conventions set sail on the high seas (Tides of Torture cruise, Saw movie cruise) as well as ones taking place in campgrounds (Haunted Slumber Camp Massacre, Horror Camp Live). We hope that these events continue to come up with crazy new ideas to keep us traveling around the country.

♦ Haunts went Hollywood – This year, we saw a few big Hollywood names step into the world of haunts: Neil Patrick Harris (co-producing Haunted Play presents Delusion), Jason Blum (producing Blumhouse of Horrors), and Eli Roth (creating Eli Roth’s Goretorium). These attractions show their movie-making influences with amazing attention to detail and production, and the celebrity backings help greatly in their promotion. As more high-profile names become involved with haunted attractions, we expect to see haunts get better and better.

♦ Knott’s Scary Farm is back on top – The original theme park haunt had slipped in quality over the past decade or so, but in 2012, they came up with some truly original concepts (Pinocchio Unstrung, Trick or Treat) that made them stand apart from their competition. Although they still have room to increase the level of scares, we were really impressed with their comeback this year and awarded them best theme park haunt.

Worst of 2012

♦ The Zombie Apocalypse arrived (and it’s time to eradicate it) - Zombies were everywhere in 2012! From the Zombie 5K race touring the country, to the “Walking Dead Escape” experience at ComiCon, to the Walking Dead mazes at Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood and Orlando (plus the Terror Tram), it was impossible to escape the hordes of bloody, flesh-craving “walkers.” Zombies have had their day, and we think it’s high time for something new. We’ve said many times that although zombies may be creepy and gross, they are not scary. But with the popularity of AMC’s The Walking Dead at an all-time high, will we be able to kill off these zombies in 2013?

♦ ”VIP” mazes and front-of-the-line upgrades emptied our wallets - Depending on the size of your bank account, this trend of “upcharging” guests at theme park haunts is either a really good or a really bad thing. If you’ve got the money, a front-of-the-line pass is a great way to beat the long lines, and VIP mazes limit overall capacity and prevent the conga-line effect inside the maze. At Knott’s Scary Farm, their VIP maze “Trapped” was able to present guests with puzzles they had to solve in order to advance to the next room, which would be impossible to pull off in a traditional maze. However, these gimmicks are just band-aids on top of overcrowding issues (especially at HHN), and we wish the theme park haunts could come up with more innovative solutions that would benefit all guests—not just those with the ability to pay more.

♦ Pop-up haunts left us disappointed – These are haunts that pop up in mini-malls or empty parking lots, usually around the end of September. Some of the owners seem to be in it just for the money and don’t have a great love of haunts or Halloween at all. Black plywood walls, cheap 3-D effects, and a lack of actors lead to a disappointing experience. Although these haunts usually have cheaper ticket prices than the big-name haunts, they usually suck and aren’t worth the money. However, rare gems can pop up occasionally. Scare Zone tries to visit as many of these haunts as possible and provide our honest reviews.

♦ Extreme haunts tested our limits“Blackout” came to Los Angeles this year, and after reading a few reviews of the New York version, we just couldn’t get excited enough to visit this one. We suppose it depends on your personal limits, but these haunts sound more like an actual torture session than a fun walk through a haunted house. What we love about typical haunts is the use of suspense, atmosphere, and well-placed startles to give you an adrenaline rush similar to riding a rollercoaster.  In contrast, the scenarios inside these “extreme” haunts are designed to make you feel very uncomfortable. We’d love to see this kind of psychological manipulation incorporated into haunts in a more subtle and fun way; until then, we just don’t feel like paying to be waterboarded.

Screaming Soon: Haunted Slumber Camp Massacre

Sunday, May 27th, 2012

Summer is just about here and that means it’s time to pack up your gear and head out to a Cabin (or tent) in the Woods. A few weeks ago we shared information on the UK’s new “Horror Camp Live!” experience kicking off on Friday the 13th weekend in July.  Now here in the U.S., Haunt Stalkers can attend “Haunted Slumber Camp Massacre” taking place in  Rockford, Illinois. This camp is actually more of a haunt convention/seminar than a full out haunt experience but it still sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

R.I.P. Productions will present the “Haunted Slumber Camp Massacre” Friday and Saturday, July 13-14, in Rockford, Ill. The event will feature interactive haunted house workshops, “Gorification” (featuring gruesome gore, airbrushing techniques, and hands-on demonstrations), “The Scarezone” (featuring character development and scare techniques), “Chiller Theater” featuring Friday the 13th slasher movies, and “Frights, Camera, Action” where you become the horror star in a slasher flick.

Cost is $35 per person, which includes transportation on the “Camp Massacre Bus” (mandatory), workshops and supplies. Visit trailofscreams.com/events for information or a registration form, or call (815) 965-6772. Attendance is limited to the first 50 victims, and registration deadline is July 1.

R.I.P. Productions has been hosting, organizing and facilitating seminars for haunt owners and actors throughout Illinois and Wisconsin since 2005. Each year since 2002, R.I.P. has brought total fear and mayhem to northern Illinois with the Trail of Screams, Screamatorium Haunted House and Fear Asylum Haunted House. The group strives to continuously stay on the cutting edge of the entertainment industry, utilizing digital technology, Hollywood-quality props and prosthetics, hosting guest appearances by professional horror film actors and providing quality, professionalism and entertainment value to every patron.

The 2012 Fear Asylum Haunted House will open Friday, Oct. 5, at the Belvidere Park District William Grady Pool. (Because of the intense nature of the event, parental guidance is strongly recommended). For additional information, the public is encouraged to call (815) 965-6772 or visit www.trailofscreams.com.

The Walking Dead Escape: New Zombie Experience During Comic-Con

Monday, May 21st, 2012

As if there weren’t enough to do during Comic-Con at the San Diego Convention Center this July, the Zombie Apocalypse will be taking hold of Petco Park, just about a mile away. The stadium will be turned into “The Walking Dead Escape,” a zombie experience that invites you to “Live the Apocalypse.”

For $70 (online price until June 9), you get a ticket to what sounds like a zombie obstacle course, where you will “climb, crawl, hide, and slide” your way to safety as you try to make your way through  zombie-infested corridors without being touched by any “walkers” (zombies). You will be scanned at the end of the course to determine if you have been infected. It’s not exactly clear what happens to you if you have or have not been infected. The mystery is intriguing.

You can participate in three ways: as a survivor (evading the zombies), as a walker (being a zombie), or as a spectator.

Although this sounds very similar to the Zombie 5K race we reported on last month, The Walking Dead Escape promises that this is not a race, and no one is timed. They estimate that the average completion time is 35-45 minutes.

This sounds like a very interesting concept. Will you brave the Walking Dead Escape?

The Walking Dead Escape runs at Petco Park in San Diego from July 12-14, 2012.

Screaming Soon: Spooky Empire May-Hem

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

This Memorial Day weekend in Florida you can crank up the BBQ, head to the beach, and do some stalking at Spooky Empire’s May-Hem.

Spooky Empire has quickly become one of the most respected horror event promotions companies in the United States, bringing to life two of the most popular horror conventions in the nation, with fans attending from all over the world.

Spooky Empire - About UsOctober’s event, Ultimate Horror Weekend, has grown significantly since its modest start in Fort Lauderdale in 2003. After finding a permanent home in Orlando, FL it has become one of the largest horror conventions in the nation, with more and more fans attending each year. Just when you think the show can’t be topped, Spooky Empire brings it bigger and better the next year! Each show is more monstrous than the last. The name describes it perfectly; it is THE ULTIMATE weekend for horror fans of all ages! Where else can you meet and mingle with your favorite horror movie and TV stars, buy any collectible you can imagine from your choice of over 200 vendors and artists, see new and up and coming films as well as your old favorites, take part in one of the largest Zombie Walks, get tattooed by some of the best artists from around the world, and of course party ‘til your heart’s content…or until you puke…and that doesn’t even list half of the events that go on during this non-stop weekend of horrors.

Still, even with the “Ultimate” event each October, Spooky Empire felt as though they could still give the fans more. So, in 2011 they introduced the first “May-Hem” event taking place on Memorial Day weekend. Although a more intimate show, May-Hem still proved to pack just as big a punch as its predecessor. May-Hem exceeded everyone’s expectations and has now become an annual event.

Spooky Empire’s ultimate goal is to provide memorable events for horror fans to return to each year, a place where they can congregate with thousands of other people with the same interests.

Spooky Empire's Ultimate Horror Weekend
