SCARE ZONE SPECIAL REPORT: CEDAR SCARES 2012

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

As most of our Haunt Stalkers know, this year marks the 40th Anniversary of Knott’s Scary Farm. Over the past 15 years, since joining the Cedar Fair theme park family in 1997, the curse of Knott’s Scary Farm has spread throughout all of the parks creating the largest theme park haunt franchises in the country. While you’ll find common maze themes across the parks such as Nightclubbing Vampires (Club Blood), Cannibalistc Butchers (Slaughterhouse) and Sinister Sideshow Clowns (CarnEvil), each park offers it’s own unique ‘cut’ of these themes mixed with their own local offerings making them all worthy of a haunt stalking (if you can get to them all).

We’ve already provided some extensive coverage of the Knott’s Scary Farm 40th Anniversary Haunt offerings. Now here’s a look at the 2012 haunts taking place throughout all the other the Cedar Fair parks, which includes California’s Great America, Cedar Point, Valleyfair, Dorney Park, Worlds of Fun, Canada’s Wonderland, Kings Island, Kings Dominion, and Carowinds.

California’s Great America Halloween Haunt

California’s Great America (Santa Clara, CA) has released full details for their2012 Halloween Haunt. This year, the event is adding another maze, Madame Marie’s Massacre Manor, bringing the total number of mazes to seven. Club Blood is also getting a new layout and some new scenes, to go along with its new name: Club Blood Re-Vamp’d. Great America’s Halloween Haunt opens September 28. Scare Zone visited the park last year and found the event to be a good value with some excellent actors and many solid mazes. You can read our 2011 review here.

Mazes:

  • * New for 2012* Madame Marie’s Massacre Manor - Money does not always buy happiness. For Madame Marie, this could not be more true. As Louisiana’s wealthiest heiress, Madame Marie has perfected the art of Voodooism. Enter her Manor with caution as there is nothing richer in her eyes than blood. Your visit in her lavish home will leave you breathless.
  • *Updated for 2012*Club Blood Re-Vamp’d - Follow the creatures of the night to the hottest nightclub around, Club Blood. This club has it all, the latest beats, the hottest dancers, but there’s just one problem…it’s overrun by hungry vampires waiting to feast on their next victim. Watch your neck or you’ll be next!
  • Carnevil - Hurry! Hurry! Step right up and don’t be shy! The most gruesome carnival is back in town. Get ready to face your worst childhood fears as demonic clowns and other freaks of nature terrify guests at every corner where they have turned the tables to make you the attraction!
  • Cornstalkers - A cult of evil scarecrows lies in wait in this overgrown path of debris, hay bales and cornstalks. Guests must weave their way through this twisting maze of bedlam, dodging a series of dead ends and avoiding the stalkers who are “dead-set” on forbidding anyone to escape.
  • Slaughterhouse: Annhilation - There’s too many people in the world and not enough food. This Slaughterhouse takes care of both problems. A constant feed of humans are being subjected to the grinders which keep the river of blood flowing through this dark complex. It’s a virtual cornucopia of bloody remains as parts are ground into a tasty meat treat, using a very special recipe which includes one very special ingredient … You. Do not let the fear paralyze you as you attempt to escape from the edge of Annihilation.
  • Toy Factory - Once a place where dreams were made, this toy factory is now a place where nightmares come true! The maniacal factory workers are manufacturing a variety of disturbing new toys and novelty items for their demented amusement, using any part available, including human parts. Buyers beware as your favorite toys have now been turned against you, or you’ve been turned into one of them.
  • Werewolf Canyon - Be careful as you venture deep into the murky woods through a hunter’s trail where the hunters have become the hunted. A pack of blood-thirsty werewolves have taken revenge on those who dare invade their domain. With only the full moon’s light to help you navigate through…can you make it out alive?
  • Black Widow’s CavernDare to enter the old, abandoned loggers run, now overrun by deadly spiders.

Stalking The 2012 Haunt Conventions

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Here’s a list of this years’s Haunt Conventions across the country. Keep checking Scare Zone for further detailed updates and information. Only 6 months til Haunt Season!

TransWorld’s National Halloween & Haunted Attractions Show

The haunted house industry’s own haunted house show will be held again in the America Center in St. Louis, Missouri on March 8-11.  Prepare for three jam packed days of over 100,000 square feet of haunted house products, amusement products, seminars, education, and haunt tours through one of America’s best haunted houses “The Darkness“. This is THE MAIN event of the year if you own or operate a haunted attraction, amusement park or any sort of amusement facilty. The show floor will showcase over 100 vendors from the Halloween and Haunted House industry!  Several entertain events are held, annual meetings for the Haunted House Association, tours through several haunted houses like The Darkness, The Lemp Brewery haunted house, and much more.

Canadian Haunters Convention

Held April 13-15 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Haunts from around Canada will visit this show to trade ideas, teach seminars and much more.

Monsterpalooza

April 13-15 in Burbank, Ca. This event is geared toward the horror film industry and fans. The convention focuses on “the art of monsters,” such as horror makeup, sculpture, and artwork. The show itself is not that big, but the presentations are always great. It’s a must-attend for anyone interested in horror makeup, art, and special effects. And of course, the presentations from horror makeup artists can be very useful for haunt actors and haunt makeup artists.

International Makeup Artist Trade Show

This is held in New York this April 14-15. Make-up artists, vendors, manufacturers and enthusiasts convene for the make-up world’s biggest gathering to discuss, display, discover and collect the best the industry has to offer.

HauntCon

HauntCon travels each year to a different city so that attendees can visit haunted houses around the country. Hauntcon is held each year in the month of May 3- May 7. This years show will be held in Monroeville Convention Center in Monroeville, PA (Pittsburgh). The tradeshow floor is smaller but with some really cool haunt vendors with cool products on display.  These shows (MHC, HAUNTCON, etc) do not offer the sheer amount of vendors and massive tradeshow displays as the Transworld Haunt does however because of their cheaper booth prices it opens the doors to smaller up and coming vendors. This year’s haunt nightly haunt tours include Fright FarmHundred Acres Manor, and Haunted Hills Estate.

National Haunters Convention (Philadelphia, Pennslvania)

This years event will be held May 4-6 in Philadelphia and will feature a tradeshow floor, haunt tours, and seminars. The show leans more towards local enthusiasts and home haunters than professional haunted house owners.  Because there are so many haunts in the area the show planners are able to offer tours through some of the best haunts in the nation.

Steele City Paracon

May 11-13 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Join the members of Ghost HuntersParanormal State, and Monster Quest  for the “Steel City Paracon,” a conference on the paranormal. Tickets are now on sale for the very intimate event–only 200 tickets will be available. The cost is $199 and includes entrance to the seminars, lectures, and networking events. With such a limited number of tickets, we recommend purchasing soon!

West Coast Haunters Convention

June 1-3 in Salem, OR.  Haunters can gather to learn new tips and trade ideas. This year’s show is expanded and will located in Portland Oregon this year at the DoubleTree hotel and expo center. The show will also feature a local haunt tour and Scare Zone plans to be in attendance here.

Great Lakes Fright Fest

June 1-3 in Petersburg, MI. This is another small haunters gathering with a focus on Michigan haunts events include demos, door prizes and events for kids of all ages. This year will include a charity driven Haunted House put on by the convention itself.

Midwest Haunters Convention

MHC is held in Columbus, Ohio June 8-10. Learn from many other haunted house owners, actors and more. The show somewhat leans towards the home haunts and enthusiasts more so than just the professional haunt owners; however, the show features a ton of vendors and events for both home and professional haunters. They’re also  hosting two bus tours: An All Day Paranormal Bus Tour and An Evening Haunt Bus Tour.

Tides of Torture

This will be the inaugural cruise for the convention focused on horror movies rather than haunts. Some of the celebrities joining in the mayhem include Doug Bradley from Hellraiser, convention regular Kane Hodder (Jason in Friday the 13th parts 7-10), Tony Todd aka Candyman, and others.

2011 Haunt Profile: The Dent Schoolhouse

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

School may be out for the summer but strange happenings have been reported again at the Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati, Ohio. According to their site, several local residents heard the old school bell at Dent ringing around 3:15am/3:22am on June 13th, 2011.  Staff and security were all gone from the building but someone or something has stayed after class. Could it be Charlie the Janitor tidying up before the kiddies return to school?

Looking back, in 1894 the Dent Public School was opened. Teaching all grades kindergarten through 12th grade, the school was seen as the ideal establishment to send the local school children.  The school was equipped with the finest teachers, cafeteria workers, and janitorial staff for miles.

The school was very successful and thought highly upon.  But in 1942 several students, known for their “disruption in the class room”, mysteriously vanished.  They were last seen at the Dent Public School.  The Dent police began an investigation and came to the conclusion that they must be runaways.  Two years later, 1945, four students went missing in October.  Local police were baffled as to what was happening to the students.  Rumors started to spread that the local children disappearing had something to do with the school.

School remained as normal but rumors kept coming out about the missing kids.  It wasn’t until 1952 when three more students were not seen after school.  Students at the public school began to complain about a strange smell that was coming from the basement.  When Charlie, the head of janitorial services, was asked about the smell he said it was the pipes clogging up.  After a couple weeks the smell subsided, but new rumors spread that Charlie the janitor had something to do about the local kids disappearances.

In October of 1955, more than seven students vanished with out a trace.  The local kids complained about a smell that was coming from the basement that was actually causing some children to pass out.  Community members of Dent rallied together and stormed up to the Dent Public School.  The angry mob bust down the large doors of the school house and proceeded to go into the basement of the school.   The local rioters were shocked at the grizzly sight that was strung throughout the janitor’s basement.

The basement was covered with the decaying remains of the missing students.  Bodies had been sealed in barrels, wedged behind the brick walls of the basement, and left in sanitary tubs to decay forever.  A search for the Janitor went over two weeks, but he was never found.  The school was closed shortly after the discovery.

The old school house is now said to be haunted with the roaming spirits of the children that were “taken care of” by the Janitor.  Rumors are that the Janitor came back after several years of the school house being closed.  His body was never found, but his spirit is still said to clean the old building.  The spirit is also said to have “taken care of” local trespassers that try sneak a peak at his home in the basement.

This coming fall it’s back to Scares for the faculty of Dent and they’re promising to have an even more intense curriculum and, for those troublemakers, the Detention Hall will also be open. The Scare Zone has heard nothing but great things about this award winning haunt. It’s considered one of the scariest haunted attractions in the nation and is known for its movie like quality and detail. We’ll have to get our permission slips signed so we can a take field trip to visit this killer campus  but for our fellow Haunt Stalkers in the Cincinnati, Ohio area here’s the details for the 2011 fall ‘Slashmester’.

Cedar Scares: Halloweekends

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

While we’ve already provided some in depth coverage on Knott’s Scary Farm (KSF), it wouldn’t be “fair” if we didn’t also provide info on its scary relatives across the country. Since 1997, Knott’s has been a part of the Cedar Fair theme park chain, which includes California’s Great America, Valleyfair, Kings Island, Kings Dominion, Dorney Park, Carowinds, and Cedar Point. Since joining the Cedar Fair family, the curse of Knott’s Halloween Haunt has spread across to the other parks. In this special Scare Zone report “Cedar Scares,” we’ll review the Cedar Fair family of horrifying haunts across the country.

Tonight we’ll start our report with a look at Cedar Point’s Halloweekends.  This year’s event will start the weekend of Sept. 17th and run through Halloween. The first Halloweekends took place at the end of the 1997 season (after Knott’s joined the family) with just a few haunted houses and minimal Halloween decorations. Over the years, the seasonal celebration has grown to much greater proportions with terrors found throughout the park with different fear factors. The event has become so popular, in fact, that attendance during Halloweekends often rivals the busiest summer days, and the number of weekends has been expanded to accommodate the demand. However, unlike Knott’s massive line up of mazes, Halloweekends features a modest four mazes. Nonethless, they have a few interesting mazes and scare zones in their line up (along with a few familar names).

First up, there’s Club Blood, which is a duplication of the “vampire-saturated nightclub” maze at KSF. Next, there’s Dr. D. Mented’s Asylum For the Criminally Insane, which sounds similar to the Asylum: Lockdown maze at KSF. This one is fairly self-explanatory. Then there’s Happy Jack’s Toy Factory, which is described as, “When is a doll not a doll? When it’s a fiendish, evil creature seeking revenge on humankind. You’ll never turn your back on a stuffed bunny again!” This maze seems like an interesting hybrid of Knott’s The Doll Factory and Uncle Bobo’s Big Top of the Bizarre. Finally, there’s Eerie Estate, which is a completely unique concept for Halloweekends. In this maze, victims enter a “stately limestone mansion that harbors deep, dark secrets, guarded by ancient inhabitants seeking revenge and looking for more permanent residents”.

Halloweekend ups the scares with an impressive five Scare Zones, compared to Knott’s three. The line up includes: Terror Island (undead pirates pillage and plunder), The Fright Zone (a fog-filled street full of sneaky sliders), Fear Faire (mid’evil monsters), Carnevil (crazy clowns and sideshow freaks—also a zone at KSF), and Cornstalkers (this is a full maze as KSF and features corn trail filled with scarecrows who are bored with just frightening the birds).

Cedar Point is actually a significantly bigger park than Knott’s, which raises the question as to why their haunt line up is rather small. Perhaps as the years go by and Knott’s has more “retired” haunts to share with the rest of the Cedar Fair family, we’ll see the Halloweekends maze line-up increase. With the addition of at least three more mazes, we’d be enticed to make the trip out to Ohio to check out Halloweekends. Until then, we’ll keep our fears near with Knott’s.
