Screaming Again: Alice Cooper is Terrorizing Universal’s HHN in Hollywood & Orlando

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

With very little surprise to us, it was announced that Alice Cooper will be returning to this year’s HHN in Hollywood with a “new” maze called Alice Cooper goes to Hell 3D. It seems that the trend is for horror rockers to get a 2 year gig at HHN Hollywood. In addition, HHN Orlando will also be getting a Alice Cooper themed maze, Alice Cooper: Welcome To My Nightmare, which was the title/theme of last year’s HHN Hollywood maze.

Last year, we were initially skeptical about the Alice Cooper maze but we actually ended up really liking the Alice Cooper:Welcome To My Nightmare as it was fast paced with consecutive scares and offered a great amount of surprises. in fact, we found it to be scarier than Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses 3D.  It sounds like with this year’s version they’ll probably be combining elements (meaning recycled set pieces)  from last year’s Alice maze and the former Rob Zombie 3D maze. We’re curious to see how different the the Orlando version will be compared to Hollywood’s versions.

There seems to be a great deal of synergy between Hollywood and Orlando this year. Of course, it has to be the year that Scare Zone is planning to visit both that they decide to have numerous similar themes. The last time they shared numerous themes was back in 2007, which was our last trip to HHN Orlando. For us, this is somewhat disappointing and we truly hope, that after this announcement there are NO MORE similarities. Of course, this year we also realize that HHN is most likely only going to offer 6 mazes which would also be the same number usually offered at HHN Hollywood; excluding Hollywood’s Terror Tram which could be considered a 7th “maze.” Also, one of Hollywood’s mazes includes a thematic overlay of  the tired, year-round haunt, House of Horrors.

In the meanwhile, we’ll remain optimistic that the next  maze announcements will be exciting and unique for both parks.

Join “The Congregation” at the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

2012 marks the fourth year of the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, one of the few Halloween-season hayrides in the Southern California area. The first year of the hayride was at King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica mountains, and the towering oak trees and rustic setting there provided a very fitting and spooky atmosphere for the event. In 2010, the hayride moved to the Old Zoo at Griffith Park, and although the Old Zoo is a cool location, the terrain is a more open, which seemed to make the actors’ jobs of hiding a bit harder, and hence the scares seemed less effective.

Now in its fourth year, the hayride is trying to find its stride, in part by creating a continuous storyline that weaves together and builds on the previous years’ events. In 2011, a back story centered on the “Clifton Twins,” two young girls who are prone to violent nightmares. This year, the hayride is building on that story with “The Congregation”:

While playing in the woods surrounding the Old Zoo, the Clifton Twins discovered a strange playmate–a little boy named Aleister. The boy had no family, no one could understand how he had survived. He would barely speak, and if he did, he preached a dark religion he had learned from the presence in the woods. Soon, he gathered a flock of followers, the Clifton family included. And on that faithful night, when all perished in a horrific church fire, Aleister’s black eyes glowed against the flicker of the match. Tonight, Aleister and his followers have returned to mark you as a witness to the prequel of past years. Examine the darkness he brought onto the community and what occurred before that fateful night the church fire killed the whole village. Ride with us as we explore the powerful hand of cults.

The 2012 hayride experience will include an “extended” ride with new scenes. They are also promising that you will get wet.

Also returning this year will be the “In Between” (a maze of black walls) and the “Purgatory side show.”

The event opens October 5.

The Walking Dead to Stalk Universal’s HHN Hollywood & Orlando

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

After much speculation (and obvious to those of us who’ve been following closely), Universal Studios officially announced today that AMC’s The Walking Dead will be joining Silent Hill as a featured theme at Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood and Orlando. When we hear The Walking Dead and HHN in the same sentence, we bitingly think of the enormous crowds and lines that both parks draw in year after year . . . but we digress. The Walking Dead will actually let Haunt Stalkers experience the horror of AMC’s blockbuster original series in elaborately themed, haunted mazes and marks the first time that a television series has joined HHN on both coasts.

The Golden Globe–nominated, Emmy Award–winning series The Walking Dead is based on the comic book written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. The series tells the story of the months and years following a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights’ creative teams are working with AMC and The Walking Dead to create an authentic experience that is true to the Emmy Award–winning hit series. The haunted mazes on both coasts will feature eerily authentic, elaborately designed, movie-quality sets that include some of the most iconic locations and scenes from the show. Mobs of undead walkers bring to “life” the vicious, hungry zombies from the show.

More details about the official announcement and an interview with John Murdy, creative director of HHN Hollywood, and Gret Nicotero, co-executive producer of the Walking Dead, were revealed by Jim Hill Media.

The mazes will feature scenarios from seasons 1 and 2 of the show, and will begin in the the hospital where Rick wakes up from his coma, a scene featured in the pilot episode. Other scenes will include the swamp and the campsite. We’ve also seen photos of a barn being constructed for the Orlando maze, so we know one scene will include the barn. HHN is also using the original molds from the show to create the makeup pieces, so characters in the maze will look exactly like those on TV.

The ‘Lil Old Town Haunt from Pasadena

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Can it be that the Old Town Haunt in Pasadena, CA is really haunted? According to a recent paranormal investigation by manofmystery24 on HubPages it is. We’re not sure if it’s coincidental that this “investigation report” has come out as we rapidly approach the 2012 ‘season of the witch’. Nonetheless, for those of us who do believe, soon it will be time to explore and find what’s truly waiting for us in the catacombs beneath Pasadena.

The Old Town Haunt

HUBS BY MANOFMYSTERY24

During the Halloween season in Pasadena, CA, there is a haunted attraction that takes place on the corner of Colorado and Raymond. It’s known as the Old Town Haunt. For $20.00, you can experience this haunted attraction. However, it is more than just a haunted attraction. This old town haunt is the site of the Pasadena Catacombs.

Discovered in 2005, the catacombs were discovered under a grate. Body parts of at least 36 different human remains were found scattered throughout the catacombs. An old abandoned mission use to be on the corner of Raymond and Colorado during the Mexican war. The catacombs that were underneath the mission were used to keep prisoners locked up. Mysteriously, these prisoners disappeared under unknown circumstances and they were found crazed into insanity. People believe that an evil spirit roams the catacombs to this day.

The mission was torn down and bank was built. In 1901, the bank was robbed by three robbers. They blew open the bank vault and escaped with gold. Even though the police surrounded the entire building, the robbers were never found. What’s amazing is when they blew open the bank vaults, the dynamite also blew open a wall. The wall opened up a path to the sealed off catacombs. People think that the robbers tried to escape through the catacombs and died there. “The ghost of the bank robbers” are said to roam the catacombs.

In 1946, after the end of World War II, Pasadena started to expand, so a new sewer system was required for the growing population. The sewer workers discovered what was later believed to be the old Spanish catacombs. The discovery of human remains were found and it appeared that it was the missing bank robbers. The only thing unexplained is that the body parts were found scattered about, and found spread out over several different areas of the underground. Then, after several mishaps, collapsing caverns, and vanishing sewer workers, the city decided to abandon the sewer plans. They thought it would be best to move to another location. The catacombs were then sealed up again.

The most talked about story of the Pasadena Catacombs is the story of Sarah Winsor. She was the 7 year old daughter of the banks president. One day, she was drawn to the catacombs and went into a bank vault when suddenly the vault door closed on her. She was locked up in the vault for nine days. When the vault was opened, her remains were found.

I was recently their doing an investigation of the Catacombs to see if it really is haunted. It was an interesting night. Getting locked up in the vault where Sarah’s body was found, my group tried to communicate with her and any other spirits that were present. I asked how many spirits there were with the SB7 Spirit Box. A voice came through saying 34. What’s interesting about that is the number of human remains that were found was 36. The number is very close and it’s possible there were 34 instead of 36 human remains found in the Catacombs.

Before we asked if any spirit were present, a voice was coming through. We asked for the name of the spirit and numerous names were coming through. The names were difficult to make out, but I did make out a Ron and a Kim. In the middle of our spirit box session, one of my team members battery died on his video camera. He had fully charged it before the investigation. Suddenly, a voice came through saying hello, so it’s possible that a spirit used the energy from the camera to communicate with us.

We then tried to communicate with Sarah. One of the people that works at the Old Town Haunt guided us that night and asked if she liked it when they scare people during Halloween time. We heard a female voice say “yes.” Shortly after that, it started to get cold in the room. This took place on a warm June night and it was about 75-80 degrees. The temperature drop was at least a 10-15 degree drop. I could feel it immediately because I was sweating and suddenly it cooled down. Using an infrared temperature gun, we looked around the room. It was 75 degrees and we detected an area that was 61 degrees.

We then decided to do a rapid EVP session where you ask questions quickly in a 2-3 minute time span. My fellow teammate had plugged in his video camera to charge up his battery. After 30 minutes, it was full again. He claims that it takes at least 2 hours to get a full battery on his camera. Back to the EVP session, I asked if something lured Sarah down to the vault. After about 10-15 seconds, a female spoke into the recorder. It was hard to make out what she was saying, but it sounded like a D word. Listening to it repeatedly, I think she said demon.

On the last part of the investigation, we went to the front of the catacombs where shadow figures have been reported. We began another spirit box session and our guide said he saw a shadow of what appeared to be a little girl. We stopped the session for a moment to check out the area. We began again and asked if it was Sarah that showed up. After a few seconds, a female voice said “yes.” That was the last part of our investigation.

After the investigation that night, I’d have to say that the Old Town Haunt is an active paranormal location. If you’re in Pasadena during Halloween, be sure to go check it out. Just don’t get locked in the bank vault.

We are VERY interested in having you join our team for this Halloween season. We’re looking for crew members 18 and older to help us scare the wits out of the general public. We’re filling roles from actors and build out crew to ticket booth workers. Our public season runs from September 28th – October 31st. Keep in mind this job isn’t for everyone. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but if you’re into scaring people in a fun environment, you can make it through.

2012′S FIRST DAY OF SIGNUPS:

We will be accepting crew applications for the Pirates of Emerson Haunted Theme Park Saturday, August 18th from 10:00am to 2:00pm
at our location in the Alameda County Fairgrounds (near Gate 8). If all positions are not filled on this day, we will have another signup day in September.

Enter at gate 12 and tell the guard you are there for Pirates. Turn right after entering. You MUST be at least 18 years old to participate.
Please bring a copy of your drivers license and your SSN. We are looking for cast members who can work AT LEAST 19 nights of our 22 night run. If you can’t work that many nights, consider coming in and doing the paperwork anyway to get on the standby list. Experience Silent Hill in the Flesh at HHN

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

Today at Comic-Con Universal Studios announced that the video game, turned movie franchise, Silent Hill will be one of the featured themed attractions at the 2012 Halloween Horror Nights events in Orlando and Hollywood. The Silent Hill announcement has definitely created a new amount of buzz among HHN fans and Haunt Stalkers.

Silent Hill has been a recurring theme on the annual HHN survey and this will be the first time they’ve transformed a video game property into a maze. In the past, themes have included exclusive iconic horror movies like Scream, Halloween, Friday The 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and A Nightmare On Elm Street. With both a new game and movie coming out this fall it all makes perfect synergistic sense as the “Welcome to Silent Hill” maze will be able to promote the release of the next installment of the video game Silent Hill: Book Of Memories as well as the release of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, which hits theaters October 26 via Open Road.

During the Comic Con session they screened a brief teaser for the movie which started with a woman running from a grotesque mannequin beast through a warehouse. Then, as the woman is trying to approach a man strapped to a bed it’s revealed that they’re surrounded by a crowd of disfigured nurses holding an assortment of jagged blades and worse. Suddenly, as the girl begins the move, the nurses start to jerk to life, honing in on the sound of the two in the middle. Now just imagine experiencing this in real life!

The screening of these two incredible scenes from Silent Hill: Revelations 3D was followed by short introductory segment with Director Michael J. Bassett, Adelaide Clemens who plays Heather in the film, and Producer Samuel Hadida. Following the movie preview this trailer played:

As you could image, the crowd erupted into loud applause and then Silent Hill Producer Tomm Hullett, Creative Director for Halloween Horror Nights John Murdy, and Orlando Show Director Patrick Braillard took the stage. First to speak was John, confirming that Silent Hill was coming to Halloween Horror Nights in both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort. He spoke of the origins of idea was reached after first meeting Tomm from Konami. “It was a perfect fit,” John admitted, “the passion for detail, I couldn’t be more thrilled with Konami helping bring Silent Hill to life.” Tomm, Creative Producer of several Silent Hill titles assured fans, “They did do their homework, and it’s going to be a cool maze.” When asked by the moderator what we will see of Silent Hill in the attraction, John was quick to reply, “All of it,” followed by, “With so much to draw from, we want to do as much as we can from it as we can.” He continued by praising the many great characters and environments they hope to recreate in the attraction, including Fog World, Other World, and many more. “First you’ll see the movie,” Michael chimed in, “then you’ll be in the movie.”

To further promote this announcement, HHN is currently giving away tickets to Halloween Horror Nights. You “just” need to follow @HorrorNights on Twitter and Tweet #UniversalHHN and #konamicode for a chance to win! For those Haunt Stalkers at Comic Con, simply stop by the Konami booth and you’ll get a chance to win HHN tickets after snapping a photo with The Nurse.

John Murdy confirmed via Twitter that the Hollywood maze will be located behind the Mummy attraction in the lower lot, replacing last year’s Hostel maze.

While we’ve already heard and seen proof of  The Walking Dead mazes terrorizing both parks, an official announcement on that property has not yet been made.

So far we like what we’re hearing from Universal for both their Hollywood and Orlando Haunts. We believe that both The Walking Dead and Silent Hill could be very scary mazes.  However, we’re also hoping that the similarities end here as we want to visit both haunts this year and have unique experiences at each one.
