Here Comes “The Hauntrepreneur”

Friday, January 27th, 2012

As if the fact he was married to Katy Perry weren’t scary enough, Russell Brand is now going to star in the first ever Hollywood movie about haunts! Given that the haunt industry takes in $2 billion each year, it only makes sense that Hollywood is now ready to bring the fun and (hopefully) terrors to the big screen.

Russell Brand

Brand has signed on for the lead role in the family-friendly film THE HAUNTREPRENEUR.  The film follows a family who hires a peculiar “hauntrepreneur” to help them adjust to their new town by creating a haunted house full of oddball characters. The script is from Scott Rosenberg, who also wrote the underrated HIGH FIDELITY, but is also responsible for GONE IN 60 SECONDS and CON AIR, so don’t get too excited.

The Hauntrepreneur is being produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes (Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes). The project has previously been described as similar in tone to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with a bit of Beetlejuice thrown in. It’s expected that Brand will play the role as an off-center combination of Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka and Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice.

We guess Russell Brand is one of the best “scareactors” currently working in Hollywood, but we  just hope that he’s able to convey the authentic ”spirit” of the haunt experience on the big screen. We also pray that this movie doesn’t turn into another Eddie Murphy Haunted Mansion type fiasco; now that was a scary mess.

‎Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride 2011

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

The famous Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride located in Glen Mills, PA has updated their site for 2011 and it looks freaking awesome. All the new information for the 2011 season is on the site and the online ticket sales button is now turned on. Keep checking back as they will be adding more scary videos and photos from past seasons. They will also be adding a “sneak preview” page with info and photos of new sets and props that their “haunt masters at Arasapha Farm” are working on this summer.

For 2011 they’re promising  new scary props, huge sets and monsters. The Haunted Hayride is also getting a makeover with a new trail section and three new sets. In addition to the infrastructure upgrades to the hayride trail, they’l be adding new scary scenes to the haunted corn maze along with a new pond filled with monsters. They also plan to resurrect the infamous “clown show”!

We can’t wait to hear what else they have in store. Here’s their new 2011 commercial to get your blood pumping with more haunt anticipation!

Theatres of Terror – A New Season

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

This year is off to a slow start as far as Horror movie releases. Most the movies coming out are home video releases of last fall’s theatre releases, which does offer a great opportunity for us to keep our blood pumping inside while it’s cold outside. Nonetheless,  there are two movies opening this week which hope to scare some dollars out of us. From the IMDB description, ‘Vanishing’ has some future haunt potential but the long delayed Season of the Witch may have to wait for its home video season.

VANISHING ON 7TH STREET

When a massive power outage plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, a disparate group of individuals find themselves alone. The entire city’s population has vanished into thin air, leaving behind heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. Soon the daylight begins to disappear completely, and as the survivors gather in an abandoned tavern, they realize the darkness is out to get them, and only their rapidly diminishing light sources can keep them safe.

SEASON OF THE WITCH

14th-century knights transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague.

Retro Terror: The Lives & Crimes of Michael Myers

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Here’s a fun look back at Halloween – The Lives and Crimes of Michael Myers. This was our favorite maze from Universal’s 2009 HHN. We hope to see Michael return again (just not the Rob Zombie version).

Opening Weekend: Kranz Haunted Asylum, Great Falls

Friday, October 15th, 2010

This weekend Montana’s premier haunt Kranz Haunted Asylum in Great Falls opens its gates of doom for the 2010 season. This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Kranz flowers and gifts shop hosting a haunted attraction. But even though it’s ‘Sweet 16;, there is nothing sweet about Kranz Haunted House. This year Kranz is also under new ownership, but the new owner promises to not only continue the haunted house tradition but to introduce a new level of terror.

It’s also said that the Kranz house really haunted, and there have been sightings or things other than the costumed ghouls. According to folks there have been a couple little shadows running around and having fun. Nonetheless, they promise to ”scare visitors “S#!TLESS”!”

Universal Hollywood HNN has SOLD OUT!

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Reports state that once again Hollywood’s HHN was packed over the weekend, with both Friday and Saturday nights selling out. Not only are they sold out, but it also feels as if they’ve sold out their haunt fans, as this year’s haunt seems to have really missed the mark by exchanging a once-great haunt experience for a quest of higher profits. It appears that Universal’s goal for 2010 is to squeeze as much money (and life) as it can out of its visitors, without caring if they have a satisfactory experience or not. In fact, on their Facebook page, Universal even boasted about being “Sold Out” as if it’s a good thing. However, what it really means is long lines, crowded walkways, and fewer scares. Many fans agree and have posted their disdain on Facebook about the overcrowded experience at this year’s haunt.

One obvious problem is that Universal has been open only two nights of the weekend. What’s up with that? They won’t add Thursday or Sunday nights to the schedule until later in the month. With haunt season in full swing and the three-day Columbus Day holiday weekend coming up, it would’ve been smart to at least be open this coming Sunday (October 10) as all other So Cal haunts, large and small, are.

It also doesn’t help that Universal has fewer than half the number of the mazes as Knott’s but similar-sized crowds, so everyone is packed into the five mazes (and Terror Tram). The only way to enjoy Universal’s haunt is to pay a surcharge for the Front of the Line Pass (FOLP). So essentially, if you want to enjoy it all, you have to pay! Perhaps if Universal Hollywood followed the procedures of Orlando and allowed only one trip through the maze with the FOLP, that would help, as the FOLP is a contributor to backing up the lines.

While we know that John Murdy and the creative team are very passionate about and good at producing innovative mazes with fully immersed environments, these efforts are long lost after one has to endure an evening battling the crowds. Perhaps they should raise ticket prices slightly and have a lower threshold for admittance and also add Sundays to their schedule to mirror their competition. In addition, they can pull back on the discount offers, which seem overly generous this year.

So if you’re planning to go/return next weekend, plan to arrived early (can’t stress this enough) and cough up the money (maybe with a lung) for a FOLP or be prepared to wait in some excruciating long lines, which is really what “Fear Fears Most”.

In case you don’t want to wait in line, here’s a video of a partial walk through of this year’s Friday the 13th: Kill, Jason, Kill maze.

2010 Haunt Profile: Hotel of Horror

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

After surviving some intense rains that pounded the east coast earlier this week, it’s now raining blood at the Hotel of Horror located in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.  Completely redesigned for the 2010 season, this haunt is now featuring 2 houses, the namesake  Hotel of Horror and the new Altered Nightmares, where the 7 deadly sins come to life.

At one time, the premises of this haunt were actually a real hotel. Now as a haunted attraction, there are reports from workers that the building is actually haunted. This could be just a story to add to the lure of the haunt, but the stories have been consistent over the years with workers reporting that they have experienced some very eerie and strange occurrences after hours. It’s even reported that some workers refuse to be alone in the building after hours.

Whether it’s actually haunted or not, this house is a very scary, promising to offer one of the most intense haunted attractions on the east coast.  We look forward to hearing some trip reports from our fellow Haunt Stalkers out there. Their 2010 haunting continues through Halloween night.
