2013 Valentine’s Haunts

The first haunt season of 2013 has arrived bringing some love and lots of fear. In the early 1900s a young entrepreneur established a doll store and factory in an old abandoned warehouse in downtown Dallas. The business soon took off and became well-known for its quality and attention to detail. The dolls were remarkably human-like and sales were brisk. Before long, business was so good that it became difficult to keep up with the orders. To make matters worse, the company found itself unable to maintain enough inventory of doll parts to meet the demand. Christmas Haunts Return for 2012

The holidays are almost upon us, so what better time to being planning your Christmas haunt stalking?

Although there are not a whole lot of scary Christmas activities out there, the list does seem to grow every year. When we hear of more Christmas haunts, we’ll be sure to bring you the details.

Las Vegas

The Screamont Experiment will re-open December 1st all decorated up with slay bells for the holidays. This multi-level 35,000 sq. ft haunted attraction is loacted inside The Las Vegas Club on Fremont Street and  was designed by the maniacal mind of The Amazing Johnathan. It certainly is not a cover up for some sort of biological disaster in the north tower of the hotel.

Goretorium hasn’t announced any special holiday plans, but the year-round haunt will continue to terrorize through the holiday season and beyond. Click here to see more of our coverage of Goretorium.

Evil Dead: The Musical

  

Tired of seeing the Nutcraker year after year? Then how about a Boomstick, chainsaw and zombies.  What’s the show that people keep returning to again and again, sometimes yelling the lines along with the actors and sometimes interacting with lines of their own? You might think ROCKY HORROR, but in this case you’d be WRONG. It’s EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL, the camp comedy that is painting the town BLOODY! Critics, fans, theater lovers, theater haters, and just about anyone who happens to find themselves at the show all agree – this is the best thing since sliced veins! Hot chicks! Dancing zombies! A guy with a chainsaw for a hand! Come get your “groovy” on! 

We hear this show in a 4D experience with a “splatter zone” so be sure to check your seats before you buy!

New York

Nightmare (Before Christmas): The Experiment is coming back to town. New York City’s Nightmare haunted house producers, the Psycho Clan, are ready to spread some holiday fear.

This event is described as a “sensory assaulting theatre experience,” the 50-minute interactive show  it runs December 7 through December 23, 2012, at Los Kabayitos Laboratorio at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center (CSV), 107 Suffolk Street between Rivington and Delancey.

Studies have shown that the anxiety of the holiday season, coupled with seasonal depression, heightens the neurotransmitters associated with feelings of fear.  The Psycho Clan plans on exploiting those levels of fear for an adrenaline rushing 50 minutes of twisted holiday pleasure, with NIGHTMARE (BEFORE CHRISTMAS): THE EXPERIMENT. This year has been expanded with all new experiments while taking old ones to a more intense level in this terrifying (and entertaining) examination into the limits of fear. The Experiment takes place in a small lab putting the audience through 10 intense experiments testing a broad range of common fears that people experience. The audience plays the subject in a case study for research on the threshold of fear. Will YOUR limits be hit?

NIGHTMARE (BEFORE CHRISTMAS): THE EXPERIMENT has been created by the Psycho Clan members: Timothy Haskell, John Harlacher, Paul Smithyman and David Hinkle.

Performances are on December 7,8,9,14,15,16,18,19,20,21,22 and 23 all at 7 and 9 pm, as well as Family Friendly performances on December 22nd, and 23rd at 3 pm

Tickets for NIGHTMARE (BEFORE CHRISTMAS): THE EXPERIMENT are $30 for regular performances, and $15 for the family friendly performances on December 22nd and 23rdat 3 pm and are available at www.hauntedhousenyc.com, or by calling 212.352.3101 or at the box office 1-hour prior to each performance.

 Southern California

Delusion is extending it’s run due to popular demand, “one final time”! As we’ve shared in our review, Neil Patrick Harris and Jon Braver have created some horrifying magic together as Delusion: The Blood Rite is adding 6 more dates to spice up the holidays between Thanksgiving and Christmas: Nov 30, Dec 1, 2, 7,8 and 9.  Special VIP tickets will be made available giving fans an exclusive behind the scenes tour with creator/director Jon Braver and a chance to join the action in a unique way. If you still haven’t experienced it be sure to go see it ASAP!

Sinister Pointe reopens this December to bring back their “Not So Merry” holiday haunt. They’ll be open December 7, 8, and 9 as well as December 14, 15, and 16 (7-midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 7-11 pm on Sundays).

Sinister Pointe is spreading a little Christmas FEAR to all you horror fiends with a NOT so merry haunt. SP will be adding a little dark Xmas flare to our existing haunt with  a few new surprises and a horrible holiday theme. This event is rude and crude! Expect inappropriate behavior, language and insults. If you are easily offended then this specific holiday event is NOT for you!!

It sounds like they are bringing back the drunken Santa and perverted bunny. Read our haunt report from last year’s holiday event to see what we’re talking about. Tickets are $17 for general admission.

Texas

Moxley Manor is open in December for their 3rd annual NightScare Before Christmas! The Holiday season has a new twist with NightScare Before Christmas at Moxley Manor Haunted House. A Nightscare Before Christmas will have all the screams that were heard throughout October, only now it is our Elves that have taken over Moxley Manor in our Christmas themed haunted house.

Haunt Report: Sinister Pointe’s “Not So Merry” Xmas

In 2011, Sinister Pointe secured a new, permanent location in Brea, California, and they promised us that in addition to being open for the Halloween season, they would open at other “select” times throughout the year for special events. They fulfilled that promise last weekend (December 9-11) by opening their doors for their first non-Halloween event: a “Not So Merry Xmas” haunt.

They did a impressive job of taking their haunt, which at Halloween time was a sort of hillbilly/slaughterhouse/cannibal theme, and transforming it to incorporate Christmas elements throughout.

As we approached the building, the exterior was lit up with red and green lights, and the 1964 claymation version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was projected onto a screen in the waiting area. A couple of scareactors dressed as satanic-looking elves roamed the parking lot, and a twisted Santa also sauntered around—drinking, smoking, and cursing.

Although the line was not nearly as long as during October, we still had a bit of a wait before proceeding to the inside portion of the queue. The movie being played in the line was a good distraction during this wait, and we hope that they add this during October, when the lines can get really long. The interior queue was also done up for the holidays, with Xmas lights strewn around and a Santa mannequin on the upper balcony. A demented elf on the balcony taunted us, made out with the Santa mannequin, and continually flipped off anyone trying to take his picture. He also made lewd gestures with mistletoe over his crotch area. We knew before we even entered the maze that this haunt was definitely Rated R and would have a different feel from the Halloween version.


Upon entering the house, we immediately had our picture taken with creepy Santa, who actually did reek of alcohol. Drinking in the parking lot was apparently not just an act, and we were really impressed with this dedication to character. After the photo op, we entered the maze. Unlike during Halloween, when the house had a “choose your own adventure” theme, this version had only one path to follow.

Many of the scenes in the maze included Xmas decorations and theming. A creepy and cool Christmas soundtrack by Jon Autopsy set a sinister Xmas spirit. Some of the scareactors were dressed as bloody elves, and new for the holiday season was a perverted “bunny” character, who we think was meant to represent Ralphie in A Christmas Story. At one point we were trapped in a room with perverted Ralphie, who dangled a carrot in a very inappropriate, and hilarious, place. There were also a couple of interactive features in the maze, which were fun.

Overall, Sinister Pointe’s “Not So Merry” Holiday Haunt was fun, but not as scary as their Halloween version. It definitely had a more “adult” feel, with all of the sexual innuendos and perverted characters roaming around. Because a lot of the scareactors got right in our faces with their nasty jokes, this interrupted the feeling of suspense the maze usually has and distracted from the scares. However, we think that was probably the point. Sinister Pointe managed to take their haunt, which was open only a couple of short months ago, and completely change the feel in it for this special event. It changed from a super scary, unpredictable Halloween maze into a fun, over-the-top holiday haunt. Taking that approach was very smart, because in the end, we in no way felt like we were just going through the same Halloween maze with a couple of Xmas decorations thrown in. It really did feel different, which is very important if they’re going to successfully open their haunt at various times throughout the year.

Although we don’t use our typical “skull ratings” for off-season haunts, we would definitely recommend checking out Sinister Pointe the next time they open. Early rumors indicate that they may be open for a Valentine’s Day haunt. “Like” them on Facebook to keep up with all of the latest news.

NYC NIGHTMARE (Before Christmas): The Experiment

The new trend of Holiday Haunts is all the rage. Now the twisted creators of NYC NIGHTMARE  are loading up their Christmas ‘slay’ and bringing to town a special Holiday Haunt experience called The Experiment. Given that Christmas has managed to creep it’s way into stores before Haunt Season even begins, it’s only fair that now Haunt Season bleeds over into Christmas. Guess this is what derives as Holidays continue to collide.

Psycho Clan, producers of NIGHTMARE, New York’s most horrifying haunted house and AOL CityGuide’s No. 1 rated haunted attraction in NYC have announced that they will expand the sensory assaulting theatre experience THE EXPERIMENT into an off–Broadway run on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. A special holiday version of NIGHTMARE (BEFORE CHRISTMAS): THE EXPERIMENT will run December 9 through December 23, 2011 at Los Kabayitos Laboratorio at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, 107 Suffolk Street between Rivington and Delancey.

“Christmas is supposed to be a joyful time. For too many, it just isn’t. If you don’t always feel joy during the holidays, a good scare will trigger those senses,” says Co-Director Timothy Haskell. “The same endorphins that are released during moments of joy and pleasure are the same ones coursing through your nervous system during times of great fright. So let fear ignite your holiday spirit!”

London’s Christmas Nightmare

The list of holiday haunts keeps growing. Today, we’re profiling a Christmas haunt from across the Atlantic: “Christmas Nightmare” at the London Bridge Experience/London Tombs.

This Christmas, The London Bridge Experience & London Tombs invite you to encounter the darker side of the festive season in their special Christmas Show “Christmas Nightmare”.

Take a journey through the historical, yet hysterical, Christmas time tunnel, courtesy of a ghostly Ebenezer Scrooge, where he will introduce you to a number of seasonal characters who have helped shape the face of Christmas over the centuries.

On your journey, you will have the chance to join the Roman winter feast of Saturnalia, where Christmas dinner is served with a twist! Visitors will get the chance to get up close and personal with the infamous ‘vomit collectors’ who were traditionally employed to clear up the vomit of diners who purge themselves to make space for the next course!

If that doesn’t put you off, we then transport you back to the medieval Viking Age where you will be invited to raise a glass or two with a Norwegian Viking storyteller. Interestingly, find out how the origin of the “modern” Father Christmas story being pulled in his sleigh, comes from the ancient Nordic God “Thor” and his sledge which was traditionally pulled by ferocious horned goats.

Another, urban legend is the Frost Fair which took place each winter on a frozen River Thames. Londoners in the 1600s were able to take advantage of these freezing conditions by ice-skating across the river. However, with this sparked the fear of frozen lakes & rivers, with the tragic story of John Smith, who fell through the ice where he met his bitter death. Visitors are then invited to experience the darker side of Christmas with the ghost of Charles Dickens, as he reflects on his experience of living among the destitute streets of London.

This special event runs from December 1 through January 2.
